Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk unleashed a fierce critique of Norwegian referee Espen Eskas following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Sporting CP in their opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League group stage, according to match reports from various outlets.
The Turkish powerhouse traveled to Portugal for the European opener, where Buruk argued that his team controlled long stretches of the first half before the match slipped away. The defining turning point arrived in the 54th minute at the Estádio José Alvalade when referee Espen Eskas pointed to the penalty spot. Luis Suárez ran behind the defense, bypassed goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır, and went down under a challenge from Ismail Jakobs. Following a review by German VAR official Christian Dingert, the penalty was confirmed, shifting the momentum firmly toward the hosts.
Okan Buruk Targets Refereeing Decisions After Defeat
Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Buruk expressed immense frustration over the officiating and the missed opportunities that preceded the penalty call. It was a match where we could easily find 3-0 and leave the field with a victory. These opportunities do not come easily in the Champions League.”
Buruk directed particular ire at Eskas, comparing the standard of officiating unfavorably to domestic competition. “We complain about referees in Turkey, but when we see this Norwegian referee… We had an experience with him before in Istanbul. His failure to show a red card and giving a non-existent penalty directly affected the score and brought the team down,” Buruk stated.
Television broadcasts also captured Buruk reacting visibly to the penalty decision from the technical area, expressing intense anger over the sequence that ultimately leveled the match and swung the fixture in Sporting’s favor.

“The penalty goal we conceded brought us down mentally very much,” Buruk explained. “Last year in the Frankfurt match, every incoming ball was a goal; today we experienced a similar break after the penalty. After 2-1, we needed to raise our self-confidence and turn the match around. It was our first match; there are lessons we need to draw from here. We are sad, we will now focus on the upcoming matches.”
