Endesa Basket Girlz: New Study Center Aims to Keep Young Women in the Game

Granada, Spain – Endesa Basket Girlz, a program dedicated to supporting young [[1]] basketball players, has launched its first study classroom in Andalusia, marking a meaningful step in its mission to combat dropout rates among teenage girls. The initiative, backed by Endesa and supported by key Spanish sports organizations, directly addresses the challenges faced by young athletes striving to balance academics and athletics.

The opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Granada’s Mayor Marifrán Carazo, Lucila Easter, president of the Association of Basketball Players (AJUB) and a former Spanish national team player, and representatives from the Andalusian basketball Federation and Endesa. Their presence underscores the importance of this project for the future of women’s basketball in spain.

Tackling the Dropout Crisis in Women’s Basketball

Launched in 2021, Endesa Basket Girlz aims to tackle a critical issue: the premature departure of girls from basketball between the ages of 12 and 18. This is especially concerning as basketball boasts the highest number of registered [[1]] players in the lower age brackets. The program’s core mission is to pinpoint and address the reasons behind this trend, offering tangible solutions to keep young women engaged in the sport.

Time management is a major hurdle for young athletes.The new study classroom at the Sports Center in Granada, the second in Spain after Vic (Barcelona), provides a dedicated space where players can effectively manage their academic responsibilities alongside their rigorous training schedules. This initiative mirrors similar support systems seen in U.S. college athletics,where academic centers are crucial for student-athlete success.

Mayor Carazo emphasized the city council’s commitment to promoting sports at all levels, particularly grassroots programs. Endesa Basket Girlz conducted a comprehensive study, led by sports psychologist Mar Rovira, surveying 634 coaches, players, and former players. The study revealed that a staggering four out of five basketball players quit before the age of 16,with time management cited as a primary reason by approximately 60 percent of respondents. This data-driven approach allows the program to tailor its interventions to address the specific needs and challenges faced by young female athletes.

The program employs a three-pronged strategy: raising the profile of women’s basketball through media initiatives, engaging professional players as mentors and role models, and providing direct support to players through initiatives like the study classrooms.
