The arrival of Edson Álvarez was not as unattainable as various media did occur, claims transfer journalist Tim van Duijn at the live transfer deadline show of Football International.

The Mexican inspector had ended up on a sidelines near West Ham United, where Graham Potter had little perspective for the defensive midfielder.

In this way, Álvarez was offered by his entourage at Ajax, which wanted to add the former Ajax player to the selection file. However, it ran into a very complicated financial picture and so his arrival was soon not possible.

De Telegraaf wrote that internally ‘with surprise’ looked at the reporting about Ajax ‘Interest in Álvarez. “He was indeed discussed. Not more, because it soon became clear that his arrival-partly due to his spacious Premier League salary-was unattainable.”

“This created the impression within the club that Ajax has been used to manage other interested parties for urgency,” could be read in the morning newspaper. Van Duijn, however, has very different information.

“Álvarez is the player they wanted and that was really not as hopeless as how they want it now,” said the club watcher. “At a certain point it trickled through, then we checked it and said: it is not yet an issue, because players have to leave first.”

Outgoing transfers were not yet completed at the time. “Then they mentioned Ahmetcan Kaplan, Sivert Mannverk and Brian Brobbey. That all took a little too long, so they couldn’t report.”

Fenerbahçe Álvarez finally picked up. The Turkish superpower closed a rental deal including option to buy with West Ham. Van Duijn: “If they had reported, they could have been able to get the price down and would it have been much more realistic. There was also just spoken with Dálvarez. We have spoken to several people about it and there is no one who said: forget it, because it is hopeless.”
