Dennis Steenland: Gold at World Transplant Games Dresden

Impressive week in Dresden
The week started on Sunday with the festive opening ceremony, in which all participating countries and a large group of donors – just like at the Olympic Games – walked into the stadium. No competitions were scheduled for Dennis on Monday and Tuesday. Instead, he fanatically encouraged his countrymen in their matches in other sports – an important part of the team feeling during the tournament.

Wednesday: 4th place at Volleyball
The volleyball tournament was on the agenda on Wednesday. Dennis was part of a team that had only trained together and in which only two real volleyball players played. In the group stage, the first match against England 1 was lost in three sets. The second game against Canada was convincingly won in two sets, after which India was also won – good for a place in the quarterfinals.
In that quarterfinals, a sizzling match against England 2 followed, which was narrowly won. The semi -final against Italy – the later champion – turned out to be too heavy; With just one substitute and tired team members, Italy was clearly too strong. The battle for the bronze was also lost to England 1. Yet the team managed to achieve a handsome 4th place.

Thursday: gold in singles
On Thursday it was time for the badminton singles, with adapted scoring to also protect athletes with heart or lung transplants: sets up to 11 points, with two sets won in the group stage and three from the knockout phase three.
As an unplaced player, Dennis immediately began by the number two of the previous World Cup-a player from Thailand-convincingly beating 11-2 and 11-5. The second group match against a German no longer had to be played; The opponent reported. With that, Dennis was immediately in the semi -final.
In that semi -final, a player from India was the opponent. Despite attempts to disturb the game- such as discussions about in and out and the use of fast shuttles- Dennis did not let himself be fooled and won in three sets. The final was another against a player from Thailand, this time against the reigning world champion. In an exciting game, Dennis pulled the longest: 11-9, 11-9, 2-11 (always rest a set) and 11-4. World champion!

Friday: men’s doubles just no medal
Friday was all about the men’s doubles. Dennis played with Marcel van der Wiel from Mierlo. The first group match against two players from India was won 11-8, 7-11 and 11-8. Against a strong English duo, it was narrowly lost in three sets. The last match against two Hungarians was an easy victory.
Unfortunately, only the winners of the group went on to the semi -finals, so Dennis and Marcel closed the tournament just outside the medals.

Saturday: Closing with emotion and connectedness
On Saturday, the closing ceremony followed, including the moving ‘Circle of Life’, in which athletes and donors together form a circle to symbolize their connection. The week was festively concluded with a gala dinner, where athletes and supporters were still talking about this special and successful week and where new friendships were created.

Finally
Big thanks go to the staff (consisting of a team manager, 2 doctors and a physiotherapist) from TeamNL who ensured that all athletes only had to focus on their sporting activities.

In 2026, the European Championships will be organized in Arnhem from 21 to 27 June. Here Dennis will defend his European title with Huisvoordeel.
