Chișinău – Serghei Clescenco steps down as Moldova’s football coach following a crushing 1-11 defeat to Norway in World Cup qualification.

The 50-year-old coach has resigned, the Football Association of Moldova confirmed after Tuesday’s historic loss. The defeat marks the team’s worst in its history, a result that echoes the kind of blowout seen in college football games when a powerhouse like Alabama faces a smaller program.

Clescenco’s departure comes after a string of disappointing results. After five matches, Moldova sits at the bottom of their qualifying group without a single point. The team, under his leadership for four years, last tasted victory nearly a year ago in a November League of Nations match against Andorra. This win was a rare shining spot in an otherwise gloomy tenure, much like a minor league team occasionally upsetting a major league contender in baseball.

during the four years together, we have survived many emotions. Some were less pleasant, which I apologize for, but there were also many beautiful.I felt support from players, fans and members of the union throughout the time, for which I thank you all, said Clescenco, a former national team player himself.

Clescenco managed moldova in 36 matches, securing 12 wins, 8 draws, and suffering 16 losses. In the 2023 European Championship qualifiers, his team managed a scoreless draw against the Czech Republic but later fell 0-3 in Olomouc. These results highlight the challenges faced by smaller nations competing against established European powerhouses,a situation familiar to fans of underdog stories in sports.
