The municipality of Yaiza celebrated its traditional Romería on Saturday in honor of the Virgen de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. This event is considered the highest participant in the past ten years.
The Romeros accompanied at least 17 decorated carts and about 20 music and dance groups on their way to the church. The starting point was the parking lot of the soccer field. The mayor of Yaiza, óscar Noda, emphasized the great participation and the happy atmosphere. He particularly noticed that many participants appeared in traditional island costumes, which made the event particularly colorful.
Romería in Yaiza: tradition and community
Raquel Roger from the group ‘Vecinos del Barranco’ emphasized the importance of Romería for the preservation of cultural identity. Her decorated cart was recognized as the best. Burros, horses and camels recalled the agricultural past of Lanzarotes. Daniel Medina, the festive representative of Yaiza, praised the enthusiasm of the participants and the involvement of the younger generation in the traditions.
The Romería offered a room for community in which people of all ages came together. In addition to the traditional offerings, the older participants danced an ISA in front of the patron. After the move, members of the city government of Yaiza handed over the offerings together with the pastor Jonathan Almeida.
Yaiza celebrates with music and community
Another remarkable aspect was the solidarity of the participants. They donated food for needy families in town. The celebrations continued with a night full of music in the Plaza, where various music groups performed. The Magas and Magos in 2025 were also elected: Valentina Morales and Daniel Díaz among the younger ones as well as Violeta Santos and Lorenzo Martín among adults.
The city council of Yaiza thanked the local police, the civil and disaster protection organization as well as all security and rescue workers for their commitment. The commitment of the festival committee and the urban staff were also recognized, which contributed to the success of the event.
