Formula 1 is on the cusp of a major transformation with the 2026 regulations. But one question looms large in the minds of fans: will these changes make the cars slower, and if so, will it even matter?

Initial simulations suggest that the 2026 cars could be one to two and a half seconds slower per lap compared to their current counterparts. This has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike. Will the reduced speeds diminish the thrill of F1, or will other factors compensate for the loss of outright pace?

One former Ferrari engineer believes that the initial concerns about lap times will fade as teams and drivers adapt. In this sport we have gone through various phases in which the cars were slower or faster, and I think that once you get used to it, then things will be fine. He draws a parallel to a baseball player switching bats, or a basketball player adjusting to a new court. The initial feeling might be off, but adaptation is key.

In our simulations we are between one and two and a half seconds slower next year at the beginning of the regulation, and clearly there will be an evolution that will make them faster. This mirrors the constant evolution seen in NASCAR,where teams relentlessly refine their cars throughout the season to gain even the smallest advantage.

However, not everyone is convinced that lap times are irrelevant. Some argue that slower speeds could reduce the spectacle of F1, making it less exciting for viewers.The counterargument is that closer racing, facilitated by the new regulations, will more than compensate for any reduction in speed. Think of it like a close, hard-fought NBA game that goes down to the wire – the intensity and drama can be just as captivating, if not more so, than a high-scoring blowout.

In all honesty, we do not have the data of all the teams, we do not have the exact levels of dementation or other of the teams. There may be some teams that initially will not be able to get the desired result and perhaps they will be a little more slow, but we do not expect that the lap times will be a topic of discussion. I also find a little surprising the reason why people really worry about it. He suggests that while some teams may initially struggle to adapt, the overall impact on lap times will not be a major point of contention.

Ultimately, the success of the 2026 regulations will depend on a complex interplay of factors. While slower lap times are a concern for some, the potential for closer racing and increased sustainability could usher in a new era of Formula 1. Only time will tell if the changes will be embraced by fans and drivers alike.
