World Badminton Day Walk: Deputy Minister to Lead


Former decorated sprinter, Olympian and current Deputy Sports Minister Sugath Thilakaratne will lead the World Badminton Day Walk, which falls tomorrow.

The World Badminton Day Walk 2025, organised by Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB), headed by Roshan Gunawardena, and its Regional Development Committee (RDC), chaired by Buddhika de Silva, is expected to see the involvement of majority of the local badminton fraternity.

The Regional Development Committee expects all players, coaches, parents, supporters and followers to join the World Badminton Day Walk which begins from the Sri Lanka Badminton Headquarters at Maitland Place, Colombo 7. The walk is set to start at 8:00 a.m. from the SLB Headquarters, and will take the route towards St. Bridget’s Convent and the Independent Square before reaching back the SLB Headquarters, covering approximately 4 km.

Many local badminton icons are expected to join the World Badminton Day Walk alongside Sugath Thilakaratne, SLB President Roshan Gunawardena, RDC Chairman Buddhika de Silva and officials of SLB, including coaches, trainers and more importantly, the players and supporters, who cohesively commemorate the founding of the International Badminton Federation, now known as BWF, on 5 July 1934.
