In fact, in June 2025, the one of 2003, which maintained the heat record so far, followed by June 2022.The key to understanding these figures is the persistent and sustained heat that has dominated throughout the month due to the constant arrival of very warm air masses from northern Africa, with values above the average day after day. In fact, there have been days when the temperature anomaly compared to the average has exceeded 5 ° C or 6 ° C. And the cherry tree has been the heat wave of the last days, which has brought the most extreme values since the beginning of the year and will still last during the first two days of July.

Daily anomaly of temperatures in Catalonia during the month of June 2025 compared to those of the period 2009-2020.

All of this has resulted in various heat records. Up to nine SMC stations with more than twenty years of data have equalized or broken their own record. Highlights are those that have been reached by the Fabra Observatory of Barcelona, who, at the age of 112, has registered in the warmest June in its history, with an average temperature of 26 ° C, which has surpassed the 2003 record by four tenths, and 4.7 ° C above the average. In addition, on Monday – the last day of the month – the highest temperature has been reached in a month of June at this point, with 37.9 ° C. Finally, June was the eighth month of the entire warmest centenary series registered in this observatory, where four of the warmiest five days in June were registered during the last week.

Many municipalities have also lived days of historical heat, but in most cases, the maximum temperature records that were recorded during the extraordinary heat wave of the end of June 2019 have not been broken. A small nuance in a permanently suffocating environment, with maxims that in recent days have rubbed the 43 ° C in Vinebre (Ribera d’Ebre) and have reached the 40th, Priorat and Alt Empordà.

Hot records at night and at sea

At night it has also been very hot, with tropical lows in many counties, and even toilet (above 25 ° C) in some parts of the coast. Up to eight SMC stations with more than twenty years of data have registered their warmer night since registrations.

It emphasizes the case of the city of Barcelona, which already accumulates eleven consecutive nights, again a record in the country that exceeds even the records of 2003. The two main factors that explain these data are the effect of urban heat island and sea water, which is very hot and does not allow to cool at night. Badly widespread sleep nights that almost leave what is known as red night – Minds above 30 ° C – in Portbou (Alt Empordà).

But the heat wave is not only lived on the mainland. The water of the Mediterranean Sea is exaggerated, with values more typical of the summer canicle, and in some cases it is 5 ° C above the average. Noteworthy are the data of L’Estartit (Baix Empordà) provided by the observer Josep Pascual, the oldest and most reliable series in the entire Mediterranean. At this coastal point the water was on Monday at 24.5 ° C, the highest temperature registered in this area in a month of June in half a century of data. Also noteworthy is the buoy of Sa Dragonera (Mallorca), which for the first time has exceeded 30 ° C in a month of June.
