Young people are booming – but coaches are missing: Flag football in Rostock fights with bottlenecks
Jul 25
The response is great, the motivation for children and adolescents higher than ever: Flag football, the low -contact variant of the American football, is also becoming increasingly popular in Rostock. But while the offspring grows steadily, the crucial forces on the sidelines and referees are missing. Particularly affected: the youth area of the Rostock Griffins.
Despite increasing demand and a strong commitment at five all -day schools in Rostock and in the district – where the Griffins already could establish flag football as part of school afternoon offers – the association reaches its personnel borders. The defect in the planned U10 team is particularly serious. This could actually start due to the interest of numerous young talents – but it simply lacks coaches. The formation of this team must therefore currently be put on hold.
“We are currently experiencing a real wave of enthusiasm. Children want to play flag football, support parents-but we lack the coaches to meet the need,” explains Andreas Suplie, head coach and primarily responsible for the youth flag area of the Rostock Griffins. “Even the current coaching staff is already working on the load limit.”
The successes of the existing program show how much potential in the region is: Four children from the youth area of the Rostock Griffin have already made it into the expanded or even final cadres of the Deutsche Flag Football national team – a proof of the high quality of the training, but also an incentive to keep and expand this level.
The time could hardly be better: With the inclusion of Flag Football to the Olympic program for the summer games 2028 in Los Angeles, sport is increasing in the spotlight worldwide. Many children are already dreaming of once on the largest stage in the world
stand – also in Rostock.
But without voluntary support, it will be difficult to give this dream a basis. The association therefore urgently calls on committed people to get involved – whether as a trainer, supervisor or referee. Previous knowledge of football is an advantage, but not absolutely necessary – enthusiasm, reliability and joy in working with young people are much more important.

The Rostock Griffins hope that there will soon be enough support to give all sports enthusiasts a place in the team – and thus set the course for a successful future in the flag football.
