And now against Real Madrid: Thanks to the two-time scorer Serhou Guirassy and the outstanding goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Borussia Dortmund has resolved his tricky round of 16 at the club World Cup against CF Monterrey around Sergio Ramos and is now dealing with the royal trained by Xabi Alonso. The team of coach Niko Kovac defeated the Mexican Underdog 2-1 (2-0) despite some wobble and took another $ 13.125 million at the tournament in the USA for the quarter -finals.
In the air-conditioned and gigantic Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, BVB took a great start, Guirassy (14th, 24th) rewarded the favorites with its early goals. But Germán Berterame (48th) brought Monterrey back into play, the Mexicans were close to equalization in the second round.
Dortmund survived the urge phase happily and yet has to be annoyed: The duel of the Bellingham brothers will not exist in the quarter-finals on Saturday (10 p.m. MESZ/DAZN) in East Rutherford because Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham saw his second yellow card in the course of the tournament and is therefore closed. Madrid, team of former Dortmund Jude Bellingham, had previously eliminated 1-0 in the round of 16 Juventus.
BVB physically set the first accents
Kovac had warned of the Mexicans’ rustic style of play. However, the opposite occurred: it was the Dortmunders who physically set the first accents, Niklas Süle cleared his opponents at the opposing penalty area and was warned orally.
The Mexicans, known by national player Pascal Groß, had a first dangerous conclusion by Nelson Dossa (11th), in which Kobel was on the post. Then Karim Adeyemi served striker Guirassy with the hoe – the rest was a matter of form for the goal scorer.
But Monterrey held against it. A crashed flank of Jesús Corona (17th) flew to the post, then Kobel saved in the highest need – Corona (20th) was offside. The conditions with significantly lower temperatures compared to the previous games were noticeable. The Dortmunders started bravely and briskly-after a ball win from Julian Rerson, a rapid counterattack ran, which Guirassy refined after the next great Adeyemi preparatory work.
Mexicans pushed for the equalization
But when Berterame hit the head at the beginning of the second round, Monterrey came up again. Fired by their loud fans, the Mexicans pushed to equalize, Kobel saved brilliantly against Corona (60th), then the Monterrey striker shot over it (64.). Berterame’s second goal (65th) did not count because of an offside position.
It became more and more louder in the stadium, more and more hectic on the square. Dortmund suffered and found hardly any relief, Monterrey ran angrily. Kovac’s attempts to make calm with change had an effect. The Dortmunders got more calm into the game again. Ramos (90.+1) gave the last big chance to equalize for Monterrey.
“Playing against the biggest club in the world is a real challenge,” Kovac looked ahead of the game against the royal after the game against Monterrey at DAZN. The duel of the Bellingham brothers will then not exist: Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham saw his second yellow card of the tournament against Monterrey and is therefore missing.
“This is very, very bitter for him. He was very much looking forward to playing against his brother,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl. “This is very sad. The situation is certainly very annoying. For him, for all of us. That was actually the story we all wanted to write.”
Apparently Jobe Bellingham was not sufficiently informed about the rule that he had to watch a game in the tournament after his second yellow card. “He didn’t know it at all and was very surprised when he heard it,” said Kovac, who, according to his own statement, had to inform the 19-year-old during the half-time break.
However, the mood at BVB, which was able to look forward to a further $ 13.125 million prize money, did not detract from Tuesday evening in Atlanta. “We are happy, everything that comes now is a bonus,” said Kovac.
