Portuguese handball continues to break down barriers, this time in the under-21 level. For the first time in its history, Portugal qualified for the World Cup final, which is being held in Poland by defeating the Faroé Islands after two extensions by 37-38 (12-15 at the interval, 29-29 at the end of regulatory time and 34-34 at the end of the first extension). In the title game, which will be this Sunday in Katowice, Portugal will face Denmark, who beat Sweden 40-37, also after extension
In a balanced game until the last second of the second extension, Portugal reached the break with a three -goal advantage, but the Nordic team was able to level the result at the beginning of the second half and was a long time in front of the scorer. The game reached the last minute of the tied regular time (29-29), with Portugal to fail their last attack, but to leave only three seconds for the Faroenses to try the last shot-they gave nothing.
The game was for extension and Portugal was able to open an advantage of two goals, but the national team failed to manage this small advantage and was tied in the last seconds (34-34), with the game to follow another ten minutes of extra time. In the second extension, Portugal again stood out in the marker, but this time managed to take the advantage to the end, with the Faroenses failing a seven meter free free.
The national selection had already reached twice on the semi-finals (1995 and 2019) and this is really the best campaign ever and only with victories-three in the preliminary round (Algeria, Canada and Croatia), two in “Main Round” (Japan and Sweden) and two in the phase to be eliminated, Egypt in the “rooms” and the Faroenses in the “socks”.
This selection oriented by Carlos Martingo already has a good deal of international a, no less than four: goalkeeper Diogo Rêma (FC Porto), right-wing José Ferreira (FC Porto), pivot Ricardo Brandão (FC Porto) and left-back Gabriel Cavalcanti (Benfica), and Brandão were in the recent World of Seniors, which also made history, in which history, made history, to history, in which he made history, to history, to history, in which history, made history, to the story classify yourself in fourth.
