One.- The president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidóhe declared in an interview with the Austrian Weekly Profile who expects new sanctions of the European Union (EU) against Caracas in the next few days.
When asked about whether he expects a hardening of EU sanctions against Nicolás Maduro’s regimeGuaidó replied: “Yes, in the next few days.”
The opposition leader considers that The sanctions are working to press the Venezuelan regimealthough he acknowledges that in Europe there are doubts about whether to expand them.
“There are doubts in Europe about whether the sanctions were effective or not. I think the current process shows that they were very useful,” Guaidó said.
“There are 28 countries, so it is difficult to find a consensus. I hope every day that the EU adopts a stronger position. But so far it has been difficult for us to get Europe’s attention to the Venezuelan crisis“said the president of the National Assembly in an excerpt from the interview published today.
The interview with the Venezuelan opposition leader took place last Friday, when he had not yet been recognized as president in charge of important EU countries such as Germany, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden or Austria.
“Venezuela is bleeding because people are leaving the country in mass due to the lack of food and medicines. I believe that my recognition as an interim president would be fair, and it would also be a tribute to those people who continue to endure, although the fight has been very brutal“Guaidó said.
In case of presidential elections, The opposition leader said that EU observers will be fundamental to certify that these elections take place in conditions of democratic freedom.
“Free elections in Venezuela require that they be carried out under qualified international supervision. And I think that is where Europe plays an important role,” he said.
