New league for more talents? Jürgen Klopp wants to revolutionize the training in German football. “I am firmly convinced that we need our own U21 league in Germany. They exist in England: The Premier League 2,” said the 58-year-old in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag: “I want us to extend the training period. This creates a new player market and a new coaching market.”
For Klopp, the “training in Germany ends too early. We stop giving the players chances too early and playing players at the age of 18 or 19 whether they have it or not. This is not good in this form,” said the Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull: “We cannot say to a 18- or 19-year-old who is parked in the 3rd league that he should stop football because he cannot prevail there around 25 or 26-year-olds who are physically much more robust.”
Klopp believes that the desired World Cup title 2026 will be “difficult” for Germany, “because Spain, France, Portugal and Holland do it very well. They have a large repertoire of excellent players. And there we are again on the subject of training: I don’t think you have talent per se, as soon as you are born in Madrid, Paris, Porto or Amsterdam,” said the former Bundesliga coach: “It is better to work what means for German football that he has to change things. The boys we talk about have to learn, and we have to help them. And do not ask them to know what they are about at 18.”
