For a long time, Colin Coosemans was the inconspicuous pawn in the shade of big names. But after a season in which he surprisingly grew into a mainstay under the bar near Anderlecht, there is now also public recognition from the boardroom. Then we can assume that Coosemans remains normal?
Sporting director Olivier Renard said in Het Nieuwsblad that Coosemans strongly strengthened his status within the club: “He has been named our player of the season and that was well deserved. As an ex-keeper, I was well placed to speak about this.”
Search for new number one raises questions
It is striking that, despite those praising words, Anderlecht are actively testing the market for a new goalkeeper. The names of Thomas Kaminski and Gaetan Coucke are circulating emphatically. It led to speculation about the fate of Coosemans, who is now 32 and made an impression last season in a role that initially seemed temporary.
Renard does not nuance those rumors, but does send a clear signal to the current number one: “It is important that Colin knows that I am very satisfied with him.” A short quote, but one with a lot of weight for those who know Coosemans’ course.
From third choice to figurehead
What started as a supporting role in 2021 – transfer -free from AA Gent – has since evolved into an unexpected leading role. After the departure of Kasper Schmeichel, Coosemans got his chance and he grabbed it with both hands.
