Strong appearance in the new age group-3rd place and qualification for the Ironman World Cup in Marbella
June 22, 2025 will remain an unforgettable day for the Mülheim triathlete Benedict Lacner: At the internationally strong Ironman 70.3 West Friesland in Hoorn in Dutch, he not only fought for a podium, but also the coveted ticket for the World Championship in November in Marbella, Spain.
It was a special competition for Benedict: for the first time he started in the age group 70–74 – a milestone that he had prepared for months with discipline, perseverance and a lot of passion. He was supported by his coaches: Melanie and Stavro from the Yeah! Sport as well as his association Marathon and Triathlon Mülheim.
Sun, wind and waves – a demanding race
The competition day presented itself in a sunny and picture book – but the summer temperatures demanded the athlete: inside everything. Swimming in the IJsselmeer in particular was challenging by strong wind and waves. On the bike route, too, gusty winds along the coastal sections ensured difficult conditions, which demanded the highest concentration and perseverance. In the final run through the historical center of Hoorn, Benedict not only carried the energy of the audience, but also the tireless support of his personal companions: inside the finish line.
3rd place and an emotional success
With a strong overall performance, Benedict secured third place in his age group – and thus one of the coveted slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Cup. “A moment full of emotions,” sums up the doctor and diabetologist. “As a doctor, I know how important exercise and nutrition are for health. The fact that I can implement and pass it on in my own life makes this success all the more valuable.”
Now the focus is on the regeneration for Benedict – before the view goes towards Spain: Marbella, I am coming!
