Avilés, Spain – Teh niemeyer Center buzzed with excitement as the Deportiva Press Association of the Principality hosted its annual Asturian Sports Gala, celebrating its 40th anniversary in style. The event spotlighted a constellation of stars,including basketball legend Luis Scola and MMA fighter Joel Álvarez,recognized as the best Asturian athlete of the past year. The gala also honored luminaries like Luis Enrique Martínez and the Olympic K-4 team led by saúl Craviotto.

Luis Scola, the Argentine power forward who cemented his legacy with a stellar NBA career, made the journey from Milan, where he currently serves as a sports director. His presence served to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Gijón Basketball’s ascent to the ACB league. Scola played a pivotal role in that achievement,then a rising talent on loan from Baskonia. The entire team, along with their coach Moncho López, received a heartfelt tribute, reminiscent of the celebrations often seen when a college team makes a deep run in March Madness.

The emotional presentation saw Luis scola and Moncho López receive the King Pelayo Trophy from Jesús Álvarez, president of the Spanish Sports Press Association (AEPD), and Juan Antonio Prieto, first vice president of the AEPD and member of the Executive Committee of the AIPS.

Adrián Barbón, the president of the Principality, presented the award, headlining a list of distinguished honorees. While Marcus Cooper was absent,Saúl Craviotto,Carlos Arévalo,Rodrigo germade,and coach Miguel garcía were all present to accept the accolades.
