The seeds of this championship were sown years ago. As Thanjeevan Shanmugarajah explains, the idea took root in 2019: In 2019, I went to Norway with Sébastien Richez to these same championships, to see how we could do to organize this to Argentan.
However, global events intervened. The COVVI-19 has been there and the project was put aside. It was in May last year, that the idea returned and that the whole project began to develop.
For Shanmugarajah, the tournament is profoundly personal. Born into the Tamil ethnicity, which shares sri Lanka with the Sinhalese, he witnessed firsthand the impact of civil war. I belong to the Tamil ethnicity which cohabited with that of Cingalais au Sri Lanka. The civil war has dispersed the Tamils all over the world. I arrived in France in 1999.
Like many Tamils, he found refuge and a new life abroad. His journey lead him to badminton in Argentan, thanks to the Richez family, who he considers his second family of heart.
Shanmugarajah’s personal success in the sport, including a world championship title in 2014, and his son Arthur’s recent victories, underscore the family’s deep connection to badminton. This year marks the tenth edition of the championship, a testament to its enduring appeal and importance to the Tamil diaspora.
Organizing an event of this scale is no small feat. Shanmugarajah acknowledges the immense effort involved: Yes, of course, and I have to thank all those who allowed the realization of this project.
