Exclusive Interview:Quarterback Legend, Joe Montana, on the Evolution of Quarterbacking and His Opinion on Today’s Quarterback Phenoms
Background
Joe Montana, a.k.a. “Joe Cool,” is a four-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP.He played 16 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of fame in 2000. Known for his clutch performances and unflappable demeanor, Montana is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
Current Relevance
As we witness the “Golden Age of Quarterbacks,” with young guns like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen reshaping the game, its fitting to discuss the evolution of the quarterback position with a legend like Joe Montana.
Interview
1. Joe, you were renowned for your “Joe Montana-like” comebacks. How do you see today’s quarterbacks handling high-pressure situations compared to your era?
joe Montana: “Well,I think we’re seeing a new breed of quarterbacks today. They’re more athletic, more mobile, and can make throws that we couldn’t even imagine back in my day. But when it comes to handling pressure, I think it’s still about being mentally tough and having that clutch gene. Look at guys like Tom Brady and Drew Brees—they’ve been doing it for years. And now, you’re seeing young guys like Mahomes and Jackson step up and make big plays when it matters most.”
you mentioned the increased athleticism of today’s QBs. Do you think this change has been beneficial for the game, or do you miss the “pocket passers” of old?
2. Joe, you’ve been vocal about your fondness for the pocket passers like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. With the athleticism of today’s QBs, do you think we’re losing some of that pocket passing precision?
Joe Montana: “I don’t think it’s a matter of losing precision; it’s just a different style of play now. These young guys can do so much more physically than we could. But I still think there’s a place for those classic pocket passers. Brady and Brees showed us that you can win with accuracy, timing, and decision-making.It’s not just about your arm strength or how fast you can run. I mean, look at Russell Wilson—he’s not the biggest or the strongest, but he’s one of the best as of his football IQ and his ability to make plays in the pocket.”
but don’t you think the mobility of today’s QBs extends the life of their careers? We’re seeing guys like Brady and Brees playing well into their 40s, which wasn’t as common when you were playing.
3. Joe, considering your history with injuries, do you think the increased athleticism of today’s QBs also helps extend their careers, or is it still a gamble with their bodies?
Joe Montana: “It’s a good point, but I think it’s a double-edged sword. On one hand, yes, being able to move in the pocket or escape pressure certainly helps prolonged the career. But on the other hand, these guys are taking more hits, especially now that teams are keeping them in the game on running plays. We’re seeing more and more QBs dealing with concussions and other injuries. it’s a tough balance.”
4. Speaking of balance, what’s your take on the debate surrounding pass interference calls and non-calls? We’ve seen controversial calls that have altered the outcome of games.Do you think the NFL should adopt the “SkyJudge” or another form of instant replay for pass interference?
Joe Montana: ”pass interference has always been a tough call for officials, but with the amount of money involved and the importance of each game, I think it’s worth looking into some sort of replay system just for those calls. You don’t want a mistake to decide the game’s outcome. But simultaneously occurring, you don’t want to slow down the game too much with endless replays. It’s a fine line.”
That’s a great point, Joe. Now, moving away from the game itself, you’re known for your charitable work off the field. Tell us about your favorite project or initiative that you’re currently involved with.
5.Joe, you’ve been very active in the community, especially with your work against poverty and inequality. Can you tell our readers about one of your favorite initiatives or projects that you’re currently involved with?
Joe Montana: “One initiative that’s close to my heart is our work with the};
/a href=”https://www.montanajimmyv.org/”>Montana-Jimmy V Foundation. My son, Nate, has diabetes, so we started this foundation to create awareness and raise funds for diabetes research and care. We want to help families affected by this disease and support those working to find a cure. It’s been a rewarding experience to give back in this way.”
Thank you for sharing that, Joe.Before we wrap up, do you have any advice for the young quarterbacks coming up in the league today?
6. Joe, as a four-time Super Bowl champ and a legend in the game, what advice would you give to the young QBs looking to leave their mark on the NFL?
Joe Montana: “My advice would be to never stop learning and never stop working. Watch the film, study your opponents, and study yourself. Surround yourself with good people who can help you improve. And most importantly, always remember that it’s about more than just you—it’s about your team, your coaches, and your teammates. Football is a team sport, and the best QBs are the ones who elevate those around them.”
Lastly, as we’ve seen the evolution of the quarterback position over the years, how do you envision the role of the QB changing in the future?
7. Joe, looking ahead, how do you think the role of the quarterback will continue to evolve in the years to come?
Joe Montana: “I think we’ll continue to see more athleticism, better training methods, and advanced technology helping QBs reach unprecedented levels of performance. But I also think there’s still a place for customary pocket passers and game managers. The key will be adaptability—for QBs, coaches, and teams to evolve with the game and find the best mix of skills and strategies to win. It’s an exciting time for football, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
