Bringing Clean Water to Tanzanian Villages: A Collaborative Effort
In the southern region of Tanzania, two remote villages, Nsele and Kilondo, face a daily struggle for access to clean water. Home to a combined population of 1,540 residents, these communities rely on Lake Malawi or a distant mountain spring over 5 kilometers away for their drinking and industrial water needs. This arduous journey for water significantly impacts their quality of life.
Recognizing the urgent need, Pastor Florius reached out to the non-profit organization KfBiA – Königsbrunn promotes well construction in Africa. KfBiA, dedicated to providing sustainable water solutions in Africa, received the project proposal and promptly began working to secure funding.
The proposed project aims to alleviate this water scarcity by establishing a reliable water system for both villages. This involves laying pipelines from the mountain spring to the heart of each village, constructing a water tank, and distributing water directly to households.Through a remarkable collaborative effort, KfBiA, the villagers, and the mission procuratorate of the Archabbey of St. Ottilien successfully secured €16,800 in funding. Notably, the WULF Foundation, a long-standing supporter of KfBiA, generously contributed €4,000, marking their 18th partnership with the organization since 2021.
Siegfried Hertlen, the first board member of KfBiA, expressed his immense satisfaction, stating, “We are thrilled to be able to help another 1,540 people gain access to clean water. This project will have a transformative impact on their lives.”
Construction is slated to commence in January 2025. The project draws inspiration from a accomplished water pipeline installation in a neighboring village, demonstrating the feasibility and positive impact of this approach.

Considering recent news about KfBiA – Königsbrunn’s project to build a enduring water system for two Tanzanian villages, we wanted your viewpoint.
Moderator: Mia, thanks for joining us. The article paints a grim picture of life in Nsele and kilondo. Walking five kilometers for water daily – the impact on daily life must be immense.
Mia Hamm: Absolutely. It’s heartbreaking to imagine children, parents, and entire communities dedicating so much time and energy just to get a basic necessity. Beyond the physical strain, think of the opportunities lost – time for education, work, and community engagement.Clean water is a essential human right, and it’s incredible that organizations like KfBiA are working to bridge this gap.

KfBiA’s success in securing funding, with important contributions from groups like the WULF Foundation, showcases the power of collaboration. Do you believe athletes and sporting organizations have a obligation to support such initiatives?
Mia Hamm: Absolutely! As athletes, we are blessed to have a platform and influence that extends beyond our playing days. We have the opportunity to raise awareness, inspire action, and mobilize resources. There’s no reason why the spirit of teamwork shouldn’t extend to addressing global challenges like water scarcity. More athletes and sporting organizations should step up and support initiatives like KfBiA.

Some argue that focusing on issues beyond sport can dilute the athlete’s message and impact. What’s your take on that?
Mia Hamm: I respectfully disagree. I believe athletes can,and should,be multi-dimensional individuals who care about something beyond their sport. Our voices can be powerful catalysts for positive change. When we use our platforms to advocate for vital causes like clean water, it inspires others to get involved and creates a ripple effect of change.
