From Napa to New York: dominique Shelton’s Gridiron Journey
dominique Shelton’s football odyssey began at the tender age of five, playing flag football in Napa, California. after graduating high school, he honed his skills at Santa Barbara City College before transferring to Mississippi Valley State University, a division 1 FCS powerhouse, for two seasons.
Seeking new challenges, Shelton joined Missouri State University in 2019. However, a combination of injury and the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic limited his playing time. Undeterred, Shelton set his sights on Europe in 2021, embarking on a transatlantic adventure that woudl see him showcase his talents in the European League of Football.
Shelton’s European journey began with the Raiders Tirol in 2022,where he made seven appearances. He then joined the Berlin Thunder for another five games, accumulating impressive statistics: 34 tackles, three tackles for loss, four interceptions, and seven passes defended.In 2023, Shelton briefly ventured to Italy, playing for the Warriors Emilia in the Italian football League. The following year, he reunited with his father, David Shelton, who was appointed head coach of the barcelona Dragons in the ELF. Dominique excelled as a defensive back, recording 32 tackles and one interception in six games.
Despite his contributions, both father and son departed the Dragons in June 2024. David Shelton resigned for personal reasons, while Dominique was released.
Shelton’s next chapter unfolded through a longstanding connection with New York City Lions head coach Troy Tomlin and defensive coordinator Dave Likins. This relationship paved the way for Shelton to join the Lions in the German Football League (GFL) for the 2025 season.

Dominique, thanks for joining us. Your path to professional football is highly unconventional. It started with flag football in Napa,California,took you through junior college and division I in the US,and then landed you in Europe. What drove you to make that transatlantic leap?
Dominique Shelton: Thanks for having me. You no, growing up in Napa, football was always my passion. Playing in the US was a great experience, but I felt like I had more to give. Europe offered a chance to challenge myself, play against different styles of football, and experience a new culture.
that’s admirable.You’ve played for some impressive teams, both in the European league of Football and in Italy. Tell us about some of the highlights and challenges of competing overseas.
Dominique Shelton: It’s been an incredible journey, there’s no doubt whatsoever.Playing for the Raiders Tirol in Austria was my first taste of professional football in Europe, and it was an eye-opener.The level of competition was fierce, and I learned so much about the European game.
Then there was the experience in Berlin with the Thunder.The fanbase there was electric,and I really felt like part of something special.
the stats certainly reflect that. 34 tackles, three tackles for loss, four interceptions, and seven pass defended in just five games with the Thunder is impressive. What do you attribute that success to?
Dominique Shelton: It was a combination of things. I was lucky to have talented teammates who helped elevate my game, and the coaching staff instilled a lot of confidence in me. But ultimately, I think it came from having a burning desire to prove myself on the European stage.
Your journey recently brought you to the iconic New York City Lions in the German Football League.How excited are you about this new chapter and the opportunity to play for Troy Tomlin and Dave Likins,错过 whom you’ve known for some time?
Dominique Shelton: I couldn’t be more excited. Coach Tomlin and Coach likins are two of the best in the business,and I’ve learned a lot from them over the years.
The Lions have a strong tradition of success. What are your expectations for the team this season?
Dominique Shelton: We’re aiming for the championship, no question. This team has the talent and the work ethic to go all the way. We’re going to bring hard-hitting,exciting football to the GFL.
Here’s a question that has sparked a lot of discussion among fans: Your talent clearly shines through in both the US and Europe, so why do you think some American players hesitate to consider overseas leagues as a viable path?
Dominique Shelton: I understand their hesitation. Leaving your comfort zone and venturing into the unknown can be daunting. But, honestly, I think more American players should seriously consider playing overseas.
The level of competition is high, the experiences are invaluable, and you get to immerse yourself in amazing cultures. It’s a chance to broaden your horizons both as a player and a person.
Dominique, you’re not just a fierce competitor on the field. you also hold a degree in Criminal Law, a fascinating juxtaposition for a professional athlete.
Dominique Shelton : Football is my passion,no doubt about it. But I’ve always been drawn to justice and the law.
For me, education is as critically important as athletics. It provides a different kind of challenge and fulfillment.

Dominique Shelton: (laughs) As a Lakers fan, optimism is always part of the equation! I think they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with.
We’ve got a young, talented roster with LeBron James leading the way.I’m excited to see what they can achieve.
