Latvian Runner Seryogins Reclaims National 5K Record in Barcelona
Dmitrijs Seryogins, a Latvian runner, has once again etched his name in the national record books. On Tuesday, he secured the Latvian record for the five-kilometer road race at the “Cursa dels Nassos” competition in Barcelona, according to the Latvian Athletics Union (LVS).Seryogins clocked an remarkable time of 14 minutes and 12 seconds, securing a 17th place finish. This achievement marks his fourth time setting the Latvian record in this particular competition. Last year, Uģis Jocis briefly surpassed Seryogins’ record by a mere two seconds.
the Kenyan runner Matthew Kipkoech Kipruto dominated the race, crossing the finish line in a remarkable 13 minutes and 28 seconds. A total of 13 runners managed to break the 14-minute barrier, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Notably, Robert Alexis Glazer, another participant, achieved a personal best of 14 minutes and 56 seconds, securing a 40th place finish.
Adding to the excitement of the day, the “Cursa dels Nassos” also witnessed a historic moment in women’s athletics. Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebeta shattered the world record for the women’s 5K, finishing in an astonishing 13 minutes and 54 seconds. This groundbreaking performance made Chebeta the first woman to complete the distance in under 14 minutes, eclipsing the previous record held by Agnes Jebet by a significant 19 seconds. Interestingly, Seryogins played a role in Chebeta’s record-breaking run by pacing her during the race.

Dmitrijs: I’ve always felt a connection with this race.Something about the course, the atmosphere, the energy of the crowd – it pushes me to perform at my best.
Host: You mentioned the crowd. This race seemed incredibly competitive, with 13 runners breaking the 14-minute mark. What was it like running in such a stacked field?
Dmitrijs: It was exhilarating and intense. Knowing you’re surrounded by such elite talent pushes you to dig deeper,to find that extra gear.
Host: Let’s talk about your specific performance. an impressive 14:12 finish is a testament to your hard work and dedication. Do you feel there’s still more you can achieve in this event?
dmitrijs: Absolutely.I’m always striving to improve, to push my limits. My goal is to continue lowering my personal best and to represent Latvia on the world stage.

You were actually pacing her during the race, Dmitrijs.What was it like witnessing history in the making from such close proximity?
Dmitrijs: It was an absolute honor to be a part of her journey. Beatrice’s determination and talent are truly inspiring. To witness her break such a meaningful barrier was a privilege.
