Maria: Absolutely. I’ve experienced the darker side of online fandom myself. It’s disheartening to see passion turn into vitriol, or respectful discussion descend into personal attacks. The anonymity the internet offers can embolden some to behave in ways they wouldn’t offline.

Maria: I fully agree with the guidelines. Every online community needs clear rules and standards to ensure a healthy and respectful environment. And yes, I beleive athletes have a responsibility to be positive role models, both on and off the court.
We have a platform, and with it comes the responsibility to use our voices constructively. We can encourage respectful dialogue, stand up against online bullying, and promote sportsmanship online just as we do on the field.
