Hidalgo Gears Up for Thrilling Charro Tournament in 2025
Hidalgo is set to kick off teh year 2025 with a bang, hosting the “Por un Hidalgo más Charro” state tournament, a major event for the beloved Mexican sport of charrería.This exciting competition, spearheaded by Jorge Uribe, a pre-candidate for the presidency of the Union of Charro Associations of the State of Hidalgo (PUA), aims to showcase the region’s vibrant charro culture and foster its growth.
Uribe envisions this tournament as a catalyst for unity and progress within the charro community. He believes that through collaborative efforts, Hidalgo can elevate its standing as a leading force in the world of charrería.
The tournament will unfold over three consecutive weekends, commencing on January 18th and 19th. The initial eliminatory round will take place concurrently in two locations: the José velázquez arena in San Pedro Huaquilpan, Zapotlán de Juárez, and the Llanos de Apan Charro arena in Apan. A total of 12 teams will compete in each venue,vying for a spot in the next round.
The action continues the following weekend, January 25th and 26th, shifting to the San Mateo Ixcuinquitlapilco community in San Agustín Tlaxiaca, where another two days of intense competition will unfold.
The grand finale is scheduled for Febuary 1st, with the venue to be resolute based on the location of the qualifying teams, ensuring accessibility for the finalists.
With 36 teams confirmed for the eliminatory round, the tournament promises to be a spectacle for charrería enthusiasts. The stakes are high, with coveted prizes awaiting the top performers.
The highest-ranking teams will receive brand-new horse saddles, while the champion team will be awarded a state-of-the-art trailer capable of transporting two animals – a truly valuable prize for any charro.
Beyond the competition itself, Uribe’s involvement in the tournament highlights his bid for the presidency of the PUA of Hidalgo.He is running alongside a new team,which includes the current management’s secretary. The election date and location are yet to be announced.

Vicente: (Chuckles) Well, politics always finds a way to intersect with everything, don’t they? while I believe charrería should primarily be about passion and tradition, I see how Uribe’s involvement can be beneficial. If his vision leads to better infrastructure,support for young charros,and increased visibility for the sport,then who am I to argue?
