Schutrups: Equipping the coronel Twins for Dakar Success
The grueling Dakar Rally, renowned as one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events, pushes both drivers and their equipment to the absolute limit. For the past three years, Schutrups Exloo, a specialist shoemaker from the Netherlands, has been a key partner for racing twins Tim and Tom Coronel, providing them with specially designed footwear to conquer the unforgiving terrain.
the collaboration began when a mutual acquaintance connected Schutrups with the coronel brothers, who were seeking solutions to enhance their performance in the rally.Recognizing the unique challenges posed by the Dakar, Schutrups, along with his daughter, embarked on a mission to create a shoe line that prioritized both functionality and comfort.
Their journey took them from Milan, where they meticulously crafted a cushioned outsole, to Turkey, where the final touches were added to the shoe, aptly named Mountos. This innovative footwear has evolved over the years, incorporating feedback from the Coronel twins and adapting to the ever-changing demands of the rally.
“The Mountos has become the ultimate outdoor shoe,” explains Schutrups. “It’s designed to perform in every conceivable surroundings, both literally and figuratively.”
The Coronel twins rely on two distinct types of Schutrups shoes during the Dakar: the “swing shoe,” often seen during post-race interviews, and the technically advanced Mountos, engineered to withstand the rally’s harsh conditions.
Schutrups’ involvement extends beyond simply providing footwear. As a sponsor,he has personally experienced the thrill and challenges of the Dakar, traveling vast distances through remote landscapes and even encountering unexpected obstacles like getting stuck in the sand.
“Witnessing the finish line from our own car was an unforgettable experience,” he shares, his enthusiasm palpable.
The Dakar Rally holds a special meaning for Schutrups, representing not onyl a sporting spectacle but also a lifelong dream. While he and his brother once aspired to compete themselves, the financial demands of assembling a racing team proved insurmountable.
Looking ahead to this year’s Dakar,Schutrups is brimming with optimism for the Coronel twins. Their new buggy, equipped with permanent four-wheel drive and a more centralized weight distribution, promises enhanced speed and agility.
“I believe they have a strong chance of finishing in the top 15,” he predicts. “These guys are incredibly skilled, navigating the dunes with remarkable precision.”
