How École du Milieu Helps Young Adults Rediscover Their Potential

Becoming an adult is never easy, especially when traditional education systems fail to meet individual needs. At destination Travail, the École du Milieu (Middle School) offers more than academic support—it’s a lifeline for young adults aged 18 to 35 who have lost faith in school and, more importantly, in themselves.

“Many young adults have given up on school as a way to realize their potential. If this is you, come see us. There are other ways to succeed,” says Julien Lafontaine, an advisor at École du Milieu.

A Personalized Approach to Growth

Lafontaine’s role is to identify each individual’s strengths, challenges, and the root causes of their academic struggles. The goal? To collaboratively develop solutions that foster autonomy,self-discovery,and future planning.

“We take the time to understand each person’s story,” Lafontaine explains. “It’s about helping them see themselves in a new light and equipping them wiht the tools to move forward.”

A Flexible Framework for Success

École du Milieu serves young adults from the Greater South West region who have repeatedly dropped out of school but are resolute to complete their secondary education. Participants commit to 25 hours of weekly activities at the Destination Travail premises on Centrale Street.

Unlike traditional schools, École du Milieu operates as an adaptable learning habitat. “We aim to be as flexible as possible to meet the unique needs of our students,” Lafontaine says.

For example, the program replaced current events discussions with a segment called Good Luck, Good News, where students share personal achievements that boost their confidence and pride.

Life Skills for a Brighter Future

beyond academics, École du Milieu emphasizes practical life skills.When staff noticed students accumulating debt from frequent Uber eats orders, they identified a lack of cooking knowledge as the root cause.

“A student suggested we cook meals together,” Lafontaine recalls. Now, the group prepares four recipes weekly and shares dinner, fostering both culinary skills and camaraderie.

Eight Years of Transformative Impact

Now in it’s eighth year, École du Milieu has become a beacon of hope for many. Lafontaine, who has been with the program as its inception, has witnessed countless success stories—from individuals becoming better parents to others overcoming violent tendencies.

“I have 350 anecdotes—which one should I choose?” Lafontaine laughs. Many alumni stay connected, returning to share their journeys with new cohorts. “Once you’ve been part of École du Milieu, you’re always part of the class,” he adds.
