navigating Rough Waters: An Interview with Former Italian Baseball Star Alessandro Maestri
The Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS) is facing a challenging road ahead. With significant funding cuts and increasing organizational demands, the future of the sport in Italy hangs in the balance. To get a better understanding of the implications, we sat down with Alessandro Maestri, a former star pitcher for the Italian national team and a vocal advocate for the sport’s growth.
Moderator: Alessandro, thanks for joining us. The recent news about FIBS’ funding cuts from Sport and Health must be concerning. How do you see this impacting the 2025 season and beyond?
Maestri: It’s definitely alarming. A €71,000 cut might seem small in the grand scheme of things, but for an organization like FIBS, it’s a significant blow. Add to that the request for facility compensation, and you’re talking about a serious financial strain.
The 2025 season could suffer. We’re already seeing the impact with some Serie B teams struggling to register. This could lead to a talent drain, fewer competitive leagues, and ultimately, less interest in the sport.
Moderator: FIBS seems determined to move forward, appointing new leadership within the CNA and national designators. Do you think this is a necessary step in the right direction?
Maestri: Absolutely.FIBS needs strong leadership right now. These appointments bring fresh perspectives and expertise to the table.
People like Fabrizio fabrizi and Dario Guido Fior have a deep understanding of the sport and the challenges we face. They can help guide FIBS through these tough times and hopefully foster a stronger, more sustainable future.
Moderator: One luminous spot in the report is the full participation in Serie A1 Softball. It seems the sport is thriving there. Do you have any insights into why softball might be doing better than baseball at this time?
Maestri: It’s hard to say definitively. Softball has always had a strong base of support in Italy. They have a history of competitive success, which likely helps attract young athletes and maintain interest. Perhaps they’re also doing a better job with grassroots growth and community outreach.
Moderator: It’s clear that FIBS has a lot on its plate right now. What’s your message to baseball and softball enthusiasts in Italy?
Maestri: Don’t give up on the sport! We need your support now more than ever. Attend games, cheer on your local teams, and encourage young people to get involved.
We need to show sport and Health, and the Italian government, that baseball and softball are worth investing in. We have a rich history and a bright future, and we can’t let funding constraints extinguish that flame.
Moderator: Thank you, Alessandro, for your invaluable insights.
