A second setback for the Dutch national team: in addition to Frenkie de Jong, Teun Koopmeiners also misses the European championship in Germany. The midfielder of the Italian Atalanta is suffering too much from a groin injury.
The 26-year-old Koopmeiners was injured on Monday evening in the warm-up for the practice match against Iceland (4-0 win). He was then replaced at the last minute in the Rotterdam Kuip by PSV player Jerdy Schouten.
Koeman does not call for a replacement for Koopmeiners. As a result, the selection of the Dutch national team during the European Championship consists of 25 players. A country’s selection may consist of a maximum of 26 footballers during the tournament.
After the match it was announced that De Jong would not reach the European Championship. The Barcelona midfielder has been struggling with an ankle injury for some time.
Maatsen called up
National coach Ronald Koeman called up Ian Maatsen as a replacement for De Jong. The 22-year-old Vlaardingen native was one of the last three dropouts from the final European Championship selection of the Dutch national team at the end of May.

Maatsen has made a big impression on Borussia Dortmund’s left flank over the past six months. He reached the final of the Champions League with the German club. This put the left wing defender in the spotlight of national coach Koeman.
Maatsen, who is still in contact with English Chelsea, was already on holiday in Greece when Koeman contacted him. The footballer is now on his way back to the Netherlands.

The Dutch team will play its first group match at the European Championship on Sunday, June 16 in Hamburg at 3 p.m. Poland will then be the opponent of the Netherlands in group D.
