Young Badminton Star Alexander Coudyzer Becomes Belgian Champion in Lokeren

Last weekend, Alexander Coudyzer from Oostrozebek became Belgian Champion in Lokeren. The 11-year-old top talent did not tolerate any opposition in the C class.

Alexander Coudyzer is only in his first year as a badminton player at Waregem Badminton Club. “Before that, I was active for the G football team of Racing Waregem for six years,” says Alexander. “I was a bit tired of this and looked for another sport. Yet I was also able to win a lot of medals with Racing Waregem when we played tournaments. I had wanted to play badminton for a long time, ever since I was eight years old, but I was only able to go to Waregem when I was eleven. I came into contact with this sport through my godmother Fara Vanderroost. I immediately got the hang of it. The Belgian Championship was my first real match that I played in a competitive context. Before that I only played a friendly match.”

Special Olympics

“Four group matches were completed at the Belgian Championships. I won the first one 2-0. The other three were a little more difficult. I always lost the first set, but then won the next two, winning 1-2. Of course I am very proud that I was able to win at my first tournament. At Waregem I train once a week under the wings of Liesbeth Vanassche and David D’Heygers. I learned a lot from these two top players. From Thursday morning (May 9) I will participate with Waregem in the Special Olympics in La Louvière. I will undoubtedly encounter many strong opponents there. My first match is already at 9:30 in the morning. The last of six games I have to play is on Saturday. Whoever wins two sets is the winner of his match. I still hope to win two games. I’m really looking forward to it,” concludes Alexander, who attends school at Sam in Deerlijk.

Yline Callens, Brecht Verleyen and Roger Vandevivere also participate in the Special Olympics for Waregem. (ELD)
