The New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 5-0 to reach 30 wins in the Major League season.
Those led by Aaron Boon had another afternoon where the Bombers’ artillery exploded again from the first inning, in addition to the airtight pitching of Clarke Schmidt.
With a record of 30-15, the Yankees have the best record in the American League and the second in all of Major League Baseball behind the Phillies (31-13).
The ninth New York equaled its third best start to a 45-game season in the last 26 years since 1999 (it was 32-13 in 2022, 31-14 in 2018 and 30-15 in 2002).
They are 15 games above .500, their highest mark, a season-high since the 2022 season ended 36 games above .500. Their run differential of +67 is the best in the American League and the third highest in the Majors, behind only the Dodgers (+81) and the Phillies (+72).
In addition, the Yankees achieved their fifth shutout of the season and second in a row after they beat the Twins 4-0 on Wednesday with a quality start from Marcus Stroman (6.0IP, 2H, 0R, 3BB, 2K).
Batting and pitching worked
Clarke Schmidt achieved the longest start of his career by covering eight scoreless innings after Anthony Volpe led off the game with a home run that led to a three-run first inning.
The right-hander, a first-round draft pick in 2017, has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his nine starts this season and lowered his ERA from 2.95 to 2.49, with a career-high 103 pitches. His longest outing had been 6 2/3 innings on Friday against Tampa Bay.
The Venezuelan Gleyber Torres hit two doubles and drove in a run. Anthony Rizzo, Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo also drove in for the Yankees, who have won 11 of 14 games.
