Xavi Simons was sent off the field with a red card for the first time in his career on Friday evening. The 21-year-old Amsterdammer, who is on loan for RB Leipzig this season, received two yellow cards and therefore red from referee Harm Osmers in the away match against TSG Hoffenheim (1-1).

Leipzig did not get further than a draw in Hoffenheim on Friday. Simons took on a negative leading role. After Benjamin Sesko’s 0-1, there seemed to be no problem for the Roten Bullen, until the Dutch international stupidly picked up two yellow cards.

After 54 minutes, Simons was whistled back for an alleged handball, which he did not agree with. The loanee from Paris Saint-Germain then shot a ball away, which Osmers was not pleased with. Simons received a yellow card and thus his final warning.

Yet Simons made another mistake more than fifteen minutes later. The attacking midfielder rashly and with an outstretched leg attacked Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach. Osmers had no choice but to show Simons his second yellow card.

For Simons it was the first red card in his career. To make matters worse, Hoffenheim managed to tie the score in the ninetieth minute thanks to a goal from Andrej Kamaric. Leipzig is therefore stuck in fourth place in the Bundesliga and will have to wait a while until Champions League football is finally available. This year, Leipzig failed in the eighth finals against Real Madrid.

Simons will not be there against Werder Bremen next week due to a suspension. A week later, his possible farewell match at Leipzig awaits a visit to Eintracht Frankfurt. Trainer Marco Rose hopes to rent his pupil from PSG for another year, although Simons seems to get a real chance in Paris.

Simons will most likely join PSG after the European Championship, where he will be contracted until mid-2027. There is a good chance that he will at least train with Les Parisiens during the preparation. The thirteen-time international of the Dutch team previously played eleven games in PSG’s main squad.

Now that the end of the Bundesliga is approaching, Simons’ adventure in Germany seems to be coming to an end. The right foot played no fewer than 42 official matches for Leipzig this season, in which he scored 9 goals and 15 assists. Simons did pick up quite a few yellow cards: no less than ten.
