Xàtiva Badminton Club Athlete Dominates Spanish Senior Championship

The athlete from the Xàtiva Badminton Club Carlos Martínez has been proclaimed champion of Spain in individual after winning the gold medal in the Spanish Senior Championship, held last weekend in A Estrada (Galicia). The Setabeense won the final of the SV++ category, a new category this season that brought together athletes over 75 years of age, beating Julio Fernández in the decisive match by 21-7 and 21-16. In the semifinals he beat Ramón Quiroga 21-12, 12-21 and 21-14.

In mixed doubles, Martínez played in the SV+ category partnering with Cristina Pastor, from CB Benalmádena, winning the silver medal after falling in the final against the British Roger Alexander Jackson and Janice Carol Jurado by 21-10 and 21-15. In the semifinals they beat José Mañana and Dolores Touriño by 21-11 and 21-13. Carlos also participated in the SV+ men’s doubles, taking bronze after losing in the semifinals against Roger Alexander Jackson and Behrooz Ziaiahmadi.

Julio Martín and Mª José Mompó got the other bronze medal, in the mixed doubles of the B2 category, losing in the semifinals against the other Valencian couple, formed by Iván Gallardo and María Jesús Almagro, by 21-17 and 21-18. Julio also participated in the men’s doubles, with Manuel Molina, from CB Vélez Málaga, falling in the second round. Mª José played the women’s doubles, with Gemma Cardigon, from CB Bianconero, finishing fifth after losing to María Jesús Almagro and Julie Loriot by a double 21.14. In category D, Santiago Villanueva competed, coming close to fifth place. In men’s doubles he played with Pedro Mateo, from CB Benalmádena, falling in the quarterfinals against Iakov Chechelnitskiy and Domingo González by 21-14 and 21-17, thus achieving fifth place.

Badminton Xàtiva also competed in the Under-13 and Under-17 Autonomous Master, in El Campello. Arnau Ballester won the bronze medal in the U-13 individual, losing in the semifinals to Óscar Cocera from Murcia by 21-13 and 21-9. Adrià Meseguer could not access the final phase. In men’s doubles, Adrià and Arnau added the other bronze achieved by CB Xàtiva in the Autonomous Master. In the semifinals they lost to Ishaan Bhartiya and Ángel Megías by 21-14, 12-21 and 12-21, finishing third.

In under-17, Ximo Torres could not overcome the group stage in either singles or doubles. The under-15s Feliu Terol, Meshack Martínez, Alexis Piñero and Martina Molina also competed, who played the mixed doubles with Feliu, and the women’s doubles with Flavia Bocica, from CB Teulada.

Upcoming competitions

The Xàtiva Badminton Club will play next weekend the Spanish Absolute Championship, Parabadminton and CNI 2024, which will take place in Cartagena (Murcia). She will participate in the para-badminton modality and in the inclusive one with Selenia Pla, who will play the singles, mixed doubles and inclusive events, in which she will try to repeat the good results of the last editions.

The Setabe club will also be in the Jocs Esportius Provincial Championship of the youngest and youngest categories, which will take place in Xàtiva this Saturday, May 11. The volleyball pavilion will host the competition, which will begin at 9 am. The CB Xàtiva will have several athletes classified in each of the categories and tests, who will seek the best results. Finally, Badminton Xàtiva will also be in the second Concentration of Autonomous National Teams Under-15 and Under-17which will take place at the Sports Technology Center (CTD) in Alicante, and in which the Setabeans Meshack Martínez, Martina Molina and Feliu Terol will participate, along with their coach Javier Alcázar.
