Will OG Anunoby Stay with the Knicks or Test Free Agency Waters?

Arriving at the Knicks at the end of December and extremely valuable in the success of New York, OG Anunoby seems destined to continue the adventure in the Big Apple, he who will be a free agent this summer. Unless…

As a reminder, OG Anunoby has a $20 million player option for next season. Given his production on the floor and what he has shown with the Knicks since his arrival, there is no doubt that OG will decline this option in order to land a nice jackpot through a new long-term contract.

It remains to be seen whether it will be at the Knicks or elsewhere.

“Anunoby’s situation with the Knicks isn’t as clear-cut as you might think,” the insider said Jake Fischer (Yahoo Sports), based on rumors from the NBA Draft Combine. “Several teams left Chicago (where the Combine took place) with the feeling that Anunoby could become an unrestricted free agent and consider a contract with other teams besides New York.”

Given the excellent fit that OG Anunoby represents with the Knicks, one might think that the player’s extension in New York is just a formality. After all, the Knicks won 26 of 31 games with OG in the lineup, and might be in the conference finals as of this writing if Anunoby hadn’t gotten hurt against the Pacers. What’s more, it’s difficult to find a player who better matches the defensive principles of coach Tom Thibodeau.

However, OG Anunoby will have the opportunity this summer to land the biggest contract of his career, and probably plans to use his free agent status to raise the stakes. The NBA is a business as they say. Could this push Anunoby towards the exit door? It’s still hard to believe that.

The Knicks, who notably let go of RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a second-round draft choice to obtain him at the end of 2023, will do what is necessary to convince him to stay. Anunoby quickly found his place in New York. It would still be a shame to cut short this adventure which started so well…
