Bundesliga relegation: What happens if there is a tie in the table?
In the Bundesliga’s relegation battle, only one thing is certain so far: namely that SV Darmstadt 98 will be back in the Bundesliga. 2 Bundesliga has to go back. However, a relegated team still has to be determined, so the 34th matchday will take place on Saturday.
The worst cards before the final round are 1. FC Köln, who are 17th and are three points short of the relegation place. Union Berlin is currently in the desired 16th place from Cologne’s perspective with 30 points.
With a win for Effzeh against 1. FC Heidenheim and a defeat for the capital against SC Freiburg, both teams could end up with 30 points. But what happens next?
There are various criteria that are used when it comes to a tie. These are weighted differently. The first criterion used after a tie is the goal difference. Whoever has the better number in this regard prevails.
If the goal difference is not sufficient, the number of goals scored will be used.
The following additional criteria will be used in the event of another tie in successive rows: the overall result from the home and away leg in a direct comparison, the number of goals scored away in a direct comparison, the number of all goals scored away before a playoff takes place in the final instance.
