His first race as a promise: a victory. His second course as promise: a victory. Just saying, Matthew Brennan didn’t miss his start as a freshman.
At the Circuit de Wallonie he was even on the podium next to winner Arnaud De Lie as number 3. Not bad for an 18-year-old boy in his first professional race.
Visma-Lease a Bike brings the British talent to the professional team a year earlier. “He is at a very high level in all areas and is an extremely interesting athlete because of that total package. That is why we quickly sat down with him to retain him for a longer period of time,” says head of development Robert de Groot.
After Tijmen Graat, Menno Huising and Jorgen Nordhagen, Brennan is already the 4th rider from the youth academy who will get a chance at the highest level next year. “A first professional contract is something big,” he responds. “I’m looking forward to being able to compete in the races that I previously watched on TV.”
Brennan is even learning some words of Dutch via Duolingo to be able to give some interviews in the Flemish work.
Sporting director Merijn Zeeman firmly believes in the Brit. “Matthew shows special things physically and in terms of personality. That is why we are confident in a successful future together.”
“We have a long-term plan with him and will gradually strengthen his program. He will therefore continue to compete with the Development Team next year.”
