Villa vs Liverpool will have an influence in the race for champions

Birmingham

Paul Merson believes that Aston Villa vs Liverpool will have an influence on the Premier League title competition. Even though it is certain that both of them cannot win. How come?

Aston Villa will host Liverpool in Week 37 of the Premier League at Villa Park, Tuesday (14/5/2024). The chances for both teams to win the Premier League are certainly closed.

Villa is currently in fourth place with 67 points. Meanwhile, Liverpool is one level above with 78 points.

With two matches remaining, neither of them will be able to catch up with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top with scores of 85 and 86 points. Arsenal and Man City will certainly compete in the race for the Premier League title until the final week.

Even though Villa and Liverpool have no chance of winning, the duel between the two is considered to have an influence on the title competition between Arsenal and Liverpool. This was expressed by former Liverpool player, Paul Merson.

Merson’s opinion is based on the fact that Villa will still compete with Tottenham Hotspur in the race for tickets to the Champions League. The Lilywhites will be Man City’s opponents in the middle of this week.

Tottenham, who are in fifth place, are four points away from Villa above them. If Villa were defeated by Liverpool, Merson believes that Tottenham would go all out against Man City.

However, if Villa wins, Tottenham will definitely not be able to overtake The Villains. This will certainly affect Tottenham’s motivation against Man City. Judging from the rivalry between Tottenham and Arsenal, Merson thinks Spurs have the opportunity to help Man City win.

“If Villa lose, Tottenham are still in the hunt (for the Champions League). So they need to get something (against City), if Villa are beaten. Every Arsenal fan wants Villa to lose tomorrow. If Liverpool can do that, Tottenham still have the ambition going into today’s game Tuesday,” said Merson as quoted by Sky Sports.

“If Liverpool win by two or three goals, then Villa play Crystal Palace (in the final week of the season). Nobody wants to play Palace and Tottenham go to Sheffield United.”

“If Villa get points, they won’t play for anything. I’ve played in those games… they don’t want Arsenal to win the league, whatever happens,” he explained.
