Victor Wembanyama, numbers and highlights of his incredible rookie season

Victor Wembanyama was unanimously named Rookie of The Year last night after a sensational season with the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama is the first French player to win the Rookie of the Year award, and the third for the Spurs, after two legends of the Texan team such as David Robinson (1989-90) and Tim Duncan (1997-98).

In the regular season, Wembanyama led all rookies in points, rebounds and blocks per game, as well as ranking fourth in assists and second in steals. Furthermore, he is the second rookie after Manute Bol (1985-86) to be the best shot blocker in the League (both by game and total).

Wemby became the first player to put up averages of at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in less than 30 minutes per game.

Finally, he is also the first player with at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 three-point shots made in a season, a further sign of the unusual versatility of his game.

The Spurs, with 9 Under 23 players, were unable to immediately turn the incredible performance of the French phenomenon into results, but during the Offseason that is about to begin they will be able to significantly improve the roster.

In fact, over the last few seasons, the Front Office has accumulated a treasure trove of future choices inferior only to that – unattainable – of the Thunder. Of particular interest are those arriving from the Raptors (protected if among the top 6 this year) and the Hawks (unprotected in 2025 and 2027, plus the right to exchange theirs for Atlanta’s in 2026).

The rumors speak of particular interest in the playmaker market….
