Victor Wembanyama Named NBA Rookie of the Year, Makes History for San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama was unsurprisingly named the NBA’s rookie of the year on Monday.

Wembanyama received all first place votes. Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren came in second with 98 second-place votes. Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets came in third place.

The first overall pick in the last draft, Wembanyama became the third player in San Antonio Spurs history to earn this honor, following David Robinson in 1990 and Tim Duncan in 1998.

The former Metropolitans 92 averaged 21.4 points and 10.3 rebounds in 71 games this season. He posted a shooting efficiency of 46.5%, including 32.5% from behind the arc.

Wembanyama distinguished himself both offensively and defensively during the season. He maintained the best points per game average among first-year players. The Frenchman also finished first in blocks and steals among rookies. He signed 22 games with at least 25 points.

On January 10, the French prodigy became the 5th youngest player in NBA history to score a hat-trick.

He succeeds Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic. Wembanyama becomes the second European player after Pau Gasol (Spain) in 2002 to deserve this title.
