Veronica Toniolo Wins Bronze at Grand Slam Judo Tournament

The Triestine Veronica Toniolo he put the 57 kg bronze medal around his neck on the first day of the Grand Slam in Monday. For the Italian, who only a week ago was awarded in Zagreb with the “Best European Junior Female Judoka 2023”, this is the second medal in a Grand Slam after Tbilisi 2023, but it is also the fourth in the World Judo Tour having climbed also on the podium in two Grand Prix, in Dushanbe, bronze last June and Zagreb, silver in August.

Toniolo’s match was authoritative and, in particular in the final for third place, of a cynical lucidity, having seized the right moment to score the winning point over Turkmen’s Maysa Pardayeva two seconds before the end of regular time.

But she was also cynical in her victory in the first round over the “Best of the Best” Telma Monteiro, who received three penalties, and over the Chinese Qi Cai, who was ruled by wazari. Only the solid Frenchwoman Sarah Leonie Cysique, current number 7 in the world ranking and Olympic silver medalist in the 57 kg in Tokyo, got the better of Veronica who, with this, should gain two positions in the world rankings.

Seventh place in the 60 kg instead for Angelo Pantano (60) who clearly surpassed the Mongolian Mendsaikhan Nyamsuren and was then defeated in the quarterfinals by the Kazakh Magzhan Shamshadin and in the repechage by the French Maxime Merlin. Finally, Elios Manzi was undoubtedly unlucky as, in the 66 kg category, he was stopped for three penalties by the Tajik Mulorajab Khalifaev.

Three athletes will compete tomorrow, Flavia Favorini and Savita Russo in the 63 kg, Irene Pedrotti in the 70 kg.
