The Bundesliga final was a rollercoaster of emotions for Union Berlin players, officials and fans. There was the view of the other places – Bochum lost 1:4 in Bremen in the parallel game – but also the challenging home game against SC Freiburg when cult coach Christian Streich said goodbye.
Despite a handball penalty missed by Josip Juranovic before the break, Union went into the final quarter of an hour with a lead thanks to Benedict Hollerbach’s goal (68′). However, when Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan equalized in the 85th minute, the capital began to tremble. The Irons were actually threatened with relegation in the season of their Champions League participation.
After Doan’s goal, the Union bench complained vehemently to the referee, and goalkeeping coach Michael Gspurning was particularly upset, and referee Christian Dingert (kicker rating 2.5) then showed him a red card. The former Austrian national goalkeeper (three appearances) had to watch the last minutes of the exciting Bundesliga duel in the stands.
From there he saw how Janik Haberer secured Union direct relegation with a penalty in added time. This makes Gspurning all the more likely to be able to cope with the ban that the DFB sports court handed him as a result of his red card.

This suspended Gspurning for a championship game on Wednesday. The Bundesliga opener of the 2024/25 season – the starting signal will be fired on August 23rd – will take place without Union’s goalkeeping coach, who has been in this position since December 2017.
Due to the indoor ban, he is not allowed to be in the changing rooms, in the players’ tunnel or in the locker room half an hour before kick-off and half an hour after the final whistle. Contact with the team is also prohibited during this period.
The 43-year-old also has to pay a fine of 2,000 euros. 1. FC Union and Gspurning have already agreed to the judgment, so it is legally binding.
