Uncertainty Looms Over Head Coach Frank Vogel’s Future With the Phoenix Suns

The future of the Phoenix Suns is more or less clear. The owner, Mat Ishbia, pointed out after the 4-0 elimination at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves that the current project was far from finished and that he saw options to fight for the ring in coming years by making some adjustments. These words should be reassuring, but not for everyone, since he was referring exclusively to the squad, and more specifically to the Big Three formed by Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

With the continuity of the hard core of the roster assured – not that there was much of an alternative –, all eyes began to point to Frank Vogel. The coach, who has completed the first season of a five-year, $31 million contract signed last summer, is in doubt after not being able to get past the first round of the playoffs. However, it is far from clear what Arizona will do with him.

Firing him is an option, but Ishbia himself stressed in a press conference that no decision had been made and that it was time to evaluate the team, with Vogel being one of the most important parts of it. Well, now it’s Duane Rankin from Arizona Republic who affirms that we will know very soon the determination that the Suns make regarding their bench; That is, if they continue with the current technician or if they fire him to find another.

The truth is that the fact that he was not suddenly fired – as was done with Darvin Ham in the Lakers – may have cooled things down and meant that they will continue with the plan established less than a year ago. In addition, seeing the defending champions being defeated by Minnesota can also make them understand that they have simply faced a team that was better.

Beyond all this data, the only certain thing is that Vogel has felt the support of the franchise at all times. Before starting Game 4 against the Timberwolves he stated that he had “full support” from Ishbia and that he was “very” confident that he would have the opportunity to coach a second season in Phoenix. We won’t have to wait long to see if he was right.
