Uncertainty Looms for Red Bull Salzburg’s Champions League Qualification

In which round will Red Bull Salzburg enter the qualification for the Champions League as Austrian runners-up?

This question cannot be completely clarified even after the Europa League final.

If Bayer Leverkusen had won, the “Bulls” would have been able to skip a stage and enter the third round instead of the second as currently planned.

However, the “Werkself” lost 0-3 to Atalanta Bergamo in the final (match report>>>). The guaranteed place in the Champions League for the EL winner now goes to the Bergamasques.

There is still a loophole for Salzburg

If successful coach Xabi Alonso’s team had won, the seeding lists in the qualification groups would have changed, among other things. Participation in the third qualifying round would have guaranteed Salzburg a fixed place in the Europa League even if they were eliminated early.

If Salzburg fails in the second CL qualifying round, they would slip into the Europa League qualification. If they then also miss out on promotion, this would result in relegation to the Conference League qualification.

However, there is still a loophole: If Atalanta finishes in the top four in Serie A – they are currently fifth – Salzburg would also enter the third round and would also be in a European group phase at the end.
