Najee Harris is the only player in Pittsburgh Steelers history to have more than a thousand rushing yards in his first three seasons with the team. However, his future with the AFC North franchise is not certain.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Steelers rejected the fifth year option in the contract of Harris. This option stipulated a salary of $6.79 million for the 2025 NFL season. However, this does not mean that the team and the player cannot work out a long-term contract.
Harris had 1,200 rushing yards in his rookie year, 1,034 in his second and 1,035 in his third for a total of 3,269 yards. Additionally, he has visited the end zone 28 times, 22 on the ground.
For the 2024 season, the Steelers have multiple options in addition to Harris. The Pennsylvania team has Cordarrelle Patterson, a brand new free agent, Jaylen Warren, who has been a part of Pittsburgh for two seasons, and Aaron Shampklin, who arrived in the NFL in 2022 as an undrafted rookie.

Pittsburgh also rejected Justin Fields’ option
The Steelers picked up another player drafted in the first round of the 2021 draft when they traded draft picks with the Chicago Bears to receive quarterback Justin Fields, chosen with the 11th overall pick.
The fate of the Ohio State graduate was the same as Harris’ as the team did not pick up the fifth-year option. Fields was scheduled to receive $25.6 million.
