All together passionately in the name of basketball. Umana Reyer, a club that plays in the top basketball league, is the first Italian professional club to set up a Unified Basketball team (Team Unified) affiliated with Special Olympics, made up of athletes with and without disabilities. The team will work alongside the men’s and women’s Serie A teams, in a sport and integration project, with the collaboration of Polisportiva Terraglio SSD of Mestre (Venice). Unified Basketball is governed by the global Special Olympics movement which, through unified sport, is creating a new world of inclusion and respect, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of their ability or disability.
Reyer’s Unified Team has athletes registered through the Italian Basketball Federation. The team is made up of a proportionate number of athletes with intellectual disabilities and “partner” athletes, without disabilities, and a coach. The Reyerina team will be made up of a roster of 10-12 boys and girls with intellectual disabilities and at least a couple of Partner players, a coach, a couple of managers who accompany the boys. The Umana Reyer Unified roster will be presented to the public during game 2 of the first playoff round, scheduled for Monday 13 May at the Palasport Taliercio in Mestre.
Umana Reyer Venezia will participate in the Special Olympics Special Basketball Tournament which is divided into three concentrations: North-East, North-West and Central-South and islands. It takes place from November 1st to May 31st, in stages, throughout the national territory, of a regional/interregional nature. Through participation in this tournament, the Special Olympics Teams offer their athletes, with and without intellectual disabilities, the opportunity to actively participate in the Special Olympics Unified Sports project. In particular, in addition to traditional basketball games, 5vs5 and 3×3 unified games are offered. In addition, Special Games are planned. The objective of the tournament is to have athletes and partner athletes play throughout the year, offering them greater opportunities for comparison, thus allowing constant sporting and educational growth over time.
