Turbine Potsdam Returns to Women’s Bundesliga: A Comeback Story

The former soccer series champion Turbine Potsdam is returning to the women’s Bundesliga after a year. In the exciting three-way battle for promotion, the league leader maintained first place on the last matchday on Sunday with a 2:1 (1:0) win at FC Ingolstadt and made immediate promotion perfect.

With the Potsdam team, Carl Zeiss Jena is promoted to the German top division as second thanks to a 2-0 (0-0) win against TSG Hoffenheim II. SV Meppen came away empty-handed in third place despite a 5-1 (2-1) win against VfL Wolfsburg II.

For many years, Potsdam was one of the most successful women’s clubs in Europe. Turbine won the UEFA Cup in 2005, followed by triumph in the Champions League in 2010. Nationally, Potsdam was the benchmark in the era of legendary coach Bernd Schröder.

The club won the championship in the GDR six times and the Bundesliga six times after reunification, as well as three successes in the DFB Cup. After noisy turbulence in the club’s management and several changes of coach, the club’s fortunes plummeted last season.
