Relegation is fixed, now TSV 1860 is working on the new squad. Only the central defense is well staffed, the Lions have to look around in the attack.

Munich – Essen, Stuttgart-Degerloch, Mannheim. Three stadiums within 24 hours. A completely normal working day for Christian Werner in the hot phase of squad planning. The sports director, in office since January, has promised a Lions team that the fans can be proud of again, a mix of motivated veterans and hungry homegrown players, all more compact (25 instead of 31 professionals) and cheaper (4.5 instead of 5 .5 million euros), designed for modern, courageous high-press football – that’s what it has to be measured against in the new season. An overview of the status of squad planning for 2024/25.

Hiller will probably remain number one – homegrown Erion Avdija is about to make the jump to the professional squad

Marco Hiller has had a stable second half of the season and his number 1 status should not be shaken. Challenger David Richter has to consider whether he should accept the fight anyway or ask for approval. His contract runs for another year, and the bosses have said that no sales are planned. Homegrown Erion Avdija (U19), who is likely to replace Julius Schmid (contract expires) as number three, is also highly regarded internally.

Lang complements strong central defense after loan – switch to a three-man chain is conceivable

The central defense is and remains the highlight of the Lions squad. Niklas Lang will join the established players Verlaat, Reinthaler, Kwado and Glück as the fifth potential regular player. It is conceivable that the Lions will switch to a three-man chain, especially since there are signs of a lack of personnel in the wing positions, on the right (Ludewig, Kurt) and on the left (Greilinger, Steinhart). It’s no secret that the Lions are relying on U18 national player Lukas Reich on the right – after short appearances against Haching and Dortmund, the 17-year-old played in Essen for the first time. Dean Dulic is also planned for the medium term, and there are two options for left back: keep Fabian Greilinger – or hope for Luca Bolay (21, free transfer), whom Werner would like to loose from his former club SV Waldhof.

Tim Rieder hasn’t extended yet – coach Giannikis is building up Kloos and Bangerter

With their top scorers Morris Schröter (7 goals, 7 assists) and Julian Guttau (7/7) bound until 2025, the Lions will also bring a lot of offensive power to the pitch in the new season. Reinforcements should come from Cologne – as reported, Viktoria ace David Philipp (4/6) is a hot candidate for a change; For Albion Vrenezi and his compatriot Eroll Zejnullahu, the signs point to a separation.

The lions are more worried about the defensive midfield: top dog Tim Rieder does not yet have a new contract, Marlon Frey is controversial. A top six would also be in the spirit of coach Argirios Giannikis, who, to be on the safe side, is building two young candidates: Tim Kloss impressed after the break against Saarbrücken (albeit at the back), and Moritz Bangerter in his starting eleven debut in Essen.

Werner is working on the transfer of Patrick Hobsch – what happens to Güler and Sulemani?

In Fynn Lakenmacher (to Darmstadt), the Lions are losing their most promising striker, and in Mansour Ouro-Tagba they are probably also losing their own top talent. Actually, Serhat-Semih Güler’s hour should come from summer, but Werner’s winter purchase for the Sturm didn’t get off to a good start at 1860, and was recently missing from the matchday squad twice. Like Joel Zwarts, a new beginning is needed.

Regardless of this, Werner is working on a premium solution: If the transfer of Patrick Hobsch (29, Unterhaching, free transfer) works, the Lions would be well positioned up front. It is unclear what will happen next for Valmir Sulemani. His contract runs for another year, but the playing times under Giannikis speak volumes (138 minutes) – at 1860 he seems to have no future.

Lions squad 2024/25 (as of May 14th)

Defense: Captain Jesper Verlaat, Max Reinthaler, Leroy Kwadwo, Michael Glück, Niklas Lang (back from Freiburg II), Lukas Reich, Sean Dulic (both from our own U19 team), Fabian Greilinger (?), and transfer candidate Luca Bolay (SV Waldhof).

Defensive Midfield: Marlon Frey, Tim Kloss, Moritz Bangerter, Tim Rieder (?).

Offensives Mittefeld: Julian Guttau, Morris Schröter, Eliot Muteba, Devin Sür (?), Raphael Ott (own U19), plus transfer candidate David Philipp (Vict. Cologne).

Attack: Joel Zwarts, Serhat-Semih Güler, Valmir Sulejmani (?), plus replacement candidate Patrick Hobsch (Haching).

Graduates: Lakenmacher (Darmstadt), Ouro-Tagba (various requests), Ludewig, Nankishi (each loan ended), Kurt, Steinhart, Zejnullahu, Vrenezi, Starke, Tarnat, Schmid, Cocic.
