Triumph for Bayern – Munich is German champion

As of: May 6, 2024 9:26 p.m

The Bayern Munich footballers have secured the championship title ahead of schedule. Eintracht Frankfurt is clearly on course for the Champions League after the win against Hoffenheim.

Thanks to the 2-1 (2-0) win at Bayer Leverkusen, Norwegian coach Alexander Straus’ team can no longer be pushed out of the top spot in the last two games. The Munich team, who successfully defended their title from last year, can continue to have a season without defeat like they did in 2015.

Across all seasons, Munich has been unbeaten in 37 league games since the 1-2 defeat at long-term rivals VfL Wolfsburg on October 23, 2022. VfL is also the opponent in the cup final in Cologne on Thursday. Wolfsburg have recently won the cup nine times in a row, Munich has only won it once in 2012.

Stanway unties the knot

The sixth-place team from Leverkusen prevented FC Bayern from celebrating their championship title last year with a 0-0 draw. This time, under the eyes of Bayern President Herbert Hainer and future national coach Christian Wück, it quickly became clear that this would not happen again.

Bayern put pressure on from the start. Jovana Damnjanovic did a great job in the penalty area and found Stanway in the middle, who only pushed in to take the deserved lead (18′). The busy national player Giulia Gwinn caused the next dangerous scene. Dallmann was denied by Bayer keeper Friederike Repohl after her pass (22′), but shortly afterwards she increased the score from a corner (27′).

Connection hit creates tension

Until the break, with loud support from the Bayern fans, the Munich team remained highly concentrated – a third goal was in the air. Leverkusen tried hard, but couldn’t counter FCB’s dominance. The away fans were already singing about the championship.

In the second half, the 2,817 spectators saw a similar picture as before. The FCB played forward again. Gwinn missed the 3-0 (49th) shortly after referee Anna-Lena Heidenreich’s restart. The ball ran well in the Munich team.

But then Bayer came close again. After a confusing situation in the penalty area, substitute Karczewska made it possible (62′). Bayern immediately switched gears again and tried to calm things down with a lot of possession. Then there was a celebration.

Nuremberg was almost relegated

After MSV Duisburg, 1. FC Nürnberg will most likely have to move to the 2nd league. At the end of the matchday, the “Club” women lost 0-1 (0-1) to RB Leipzig on Monday (May 6th, 2024) thanks to a goal from Vanessa Fudalla (35th) and are six points behind with two matchdays before the end of the season and 26 gates to the saving bank.

Frankfurt on course for the Champions League

Eintracht Frankfurt has taken a big step towards the Champions League. Coach Niko Arnautis’ team secured third place in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 (2-0) win over direct rivals TSG Hoffenheim. With two matchdays to go, Frankfurt is four points ahead of Hoffenheim. Third place entitles you to take part in the qualification for the premier class.

An early goal from Pia-Sophie Wolter (17th) and a brace from national player Nicole Anyomi (35th/47th) quickly made things clear, and Vanessa Leimenstoll (90th + 3) managed to catch up

Essen defeated weak Freiburg women

Meanwhile, SGS Essen secured its place in the top five of the Bundesliga on Sunday (May 5th, 2024). A goal from Ramona Maier (64th) ensured SC Freiburg’s third success in a row, meaning that Essen, in fifth place with 32 points, is four points ahead of Leverkusen (6th). The Breisgau women, on the other hand, suffered their fourth defeat in a row and should be happy to have built up a big lead over the relegation zone early on.

Wolfsburg achieves a landslide victory

On Friday evening (May 3rd, 2024), VfL Wolfsburg prevented a possible Bayern championship celebration on the couch. Coach Tommy Stroot’s team, seven points behind Munich before the third-to-last matchday, won 5-1 (4-0) against 1. FC Köln. Due to the defeat of the Nuremberg women, staying in the league should no longer be in danger.

VfL made things clear early on. Dominique Janssen (7th minute) took the lead with a header. Top scorer Ewa Pajor (12th, 23rd) followed up shortly afterwards with her goals 14 and 15 of the season, DFB captain Alexandra Popp (36th) increased the score to 4-0 before the break. Anna Gerhardt (54th), sister of VfL professional Yannick Gerhardt, shortened the score in the second half, Wolfsburg’s Vivien Endemann (80th) made the final score.

Pokalfinale am 9. Mai

The Wolfsburg women can still hope to defend their title in the DFB Cup. In the final in Cologne next Thursday (May 9th, 2024, 4:00 p.m./ZDF), the second national trophy will be in the direct duel between the two top Bundesliga teams against FC Bayern.
