Rita’s smile faded this afternoon. You passed away due to serious injuries sustained in a serious road accident that occurred outside your home, in the Fuorigrotta neighborhood of Naples, at first light on Sunday.
Rita Granata, 27 years old, was returning home after an evening spent with friends: she had decided to take a taxi to get around, so as not to have problems if she had drunk a little more or if she was tired. But when she got out of the white car, her life and her dreams were thrown up in the air.
A car, coming at speed, hit her while she, prudent and respectful of the rules, was crossing the crossing to reach the door of the building where she lived, which was a few meters away from the taxi.
A violent blow, with Rita thrown about 30 metres. It was understood that her condition was serious, but from that moment on we began to hope. To hope and pray. Hoping to see that “warm and generous” smile again, to once again embrace a “warrior of peace, a force of nature, ready to help everyone with your brightness and intelligence”.
A dynamic girl who loved sports and especially judo. She is a girl also committed to the area where she lived, that area that she loved deeply and which saw her die.
Rita was part of the «Naples 20 30» movement, with which – in the 2021 Naples administrative elections – she ran as a municipal councilor (in support of the mayoral candidate Alessandra Clemente).
And «Napoli 20 30» dedicated a moving memory to her on social media and made an important promise to her: «Rita, you had a great gift: to enter hearts and stay there, we will not forget you and we will fight so that what you do never happens again. you had to suffer unjustly. Those who knew her know how sweet, sunny Rita was, full of energy and ideas that she gave to her beloved city: she always stood out for her passion, education, smile, determination, light, a beautiful light . She is a young woman, a sportswoman, with an edge: supportive and generous towards everyone.”
After the candidacy failed, Rita continued her commitment. With movement and also outside. She and three friends had created a Study Center dedicated to the European Union, “so that many young students could educate themselves without being exploited”. A passion, hers, which had also marked her course of study: in 2022 she obtained a master’s degree in International Relations. Rita’s intense life. Projected towards great horizons. Then, however, on Sunday morning a car driven by a 24-year-old boy with a 22-year-old passenger on board extinguished his smile and his destiny. A dramatic and cursed Sunday.
Because in those same hours, not far from Fuorigrotta, another girl died due to a hit-and-run. Her name was Sara Romano, she was 21 years old, and she too, like Rita, was returning from an evening at the disco with her friends. She had asked her friend who she was driving to stop, offering to take her place at the wheel because she felt safer. But when she got out of the car (she was sitting behind her), to reach the driver’s seat, one of her SUVs hit her and then fled. Sara died instantly, the driver of the SUV – a 29-year-old – was later identified and arrested. And just this afternoon the news of the validation of the arrest arrived: the judge for preliminary investigations of the Court of Naples ordered prison for the young man for the crime of vehicular homicide aggravated by escape.
