Towers Hamburg Defeat Tübingen to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Hamburg (dpa/lno). It sounds like a supposedly easy task for the Towers in Tübingen after the Tigers were the first to be relegated from the BBL. But it was only after the break that the guests were clearly the better team.

The Veolia Towers Hamburg still have it in their own hands to make it to the play-ins in the Basketball Bundesliga. On Thursday, coach Benka Barloschky’s team beat the Tigers Tübingen 93:78 (47:43) and defended tenth place in the table. So on the last matchday of the main round on Sunday there will be a long-distance duel against Bamberg, which has one less win to its name.

The Hamburg team initially lived up to their role as favorites against Tübingen, who had already been relegated. The North Germans quickly led 10-2, but fell behind at the end of the first quarter. The second section was balanced for a long time. Shortly before the break, however, the Towers managed to present the score again.

Even after the break, the Hanseatic League dominated. The Barloschky team had a good hit rate on offense and allowed very little defensively. In the meantime the lead grew to 21 points. In the middle of the final period, however, the Towers no longer acted quite as consistently and allowed Tübingen to get within 72:84 just under three minutes before the end. After that, the Hanseatic League increased the pressure again and achieved a clear success.
