Towards a Final Four at the Champions Trophy

The 2024 edition of the Champions Trophy (TDC) will take place in early August in Beijing, China, as L’Équipe revealed on Tuesday, and will pit PSG, French champions, against Lyon if OL win the Coupe de France against Paris on May 25, or in Monaco, second in L1, if it is the Parisians who win. This decision must still be validated at the next board of directors of the Professional Football League (LFP), scheduled for June 5.

The Trophy scheduled for winter with four teams?

As part of this meeting, Vincent Labrune, the president of the body, would consider proposing a double reform of the TDC for the following years. First, a change of date so that it can take place in winter, like this year, and secondly a change of format, with a Final Four such as in Spain or Italy.

The new Trophy should bring together four teams, the French champion, the winner of the Cup and the 2nd and 3rd in L1, in the form of a mini-tournament with two semi-finals and a final. This reform aims to ensure the presence of the best teams in the Championship in order to optimize the promotion of L1 abroad.

For the 2025 edition, the idea would be to go to Africa, where L1 is very popular. With this in mind, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), twice an unsuccessful candidate this year and the previous one, would be favored by the LFP.
